Town Center Mall Off-Limits

Today, I made my once-a-year trip to the mall to finish Christmas shopping. Given that bad things can happen in places where large numbers of people are gathered, I tend to be pretty vigilant. As such, I took notice of their new policy sign.

Town Center Mall

Rule #6 is a new wrinkle:  Possession or carrying of firearms or weapons of any kind, openly or concealed, with or without a permit is prohibited.

That wasn't there last year.

People have been open-carrying there.  I know; I spoke to one a few months back who bragged about it.  This is the result.  Yet again, those of us who exercise discretion and common sense have to suffer for the actions of those who choose not to.

  1. If it's any consolation, take note of the proviso at the end. All they can do is throw you out if they catch you carrying. If you're properly carrying a concealed weapon it's not likely you'll be made, so it becomes more or less a non-issue.

By the way, is there any law in Georgia about posting? Can they post the place off-limits? Must the sign be of a certain format and size?

Regardless, were I you I'd make it a point to tell my friends about it and have them stay away from there in addition to writing the businesses with the specific monetary value of the business they lost because of the policy. Maybe it works, maybe it doesn't, but it's the right way to rectify the situation.

  2. There is no law against carrying in a posted location, but there's a real ethical issue. By carrying there, I'd be contravening the wishes of the property owner. I'm a big property-rights guy, and that gives me pause.

Frankly, we shouldn't be in this position in the first place. We wouldn't have to "rectify" anything if someone hadn't behaved thoughtlessly.

In any case, by the time a location gets posted, the dialogue is pretty much over. A poor impression has been made, and the owner is now hostile to the issue. I doubt I'm the first person to notice, and I'm sure the ownership has already received emails castigating him about the policy and claiming that he'll soon be out of business.

All of which will, to him, justify the policy.

  3. It is why I don't step foot in there, only to pay my Sears bill, where I want to say they don't have a sign - seeing it is an anchor store. However, I could be mistaking seeing I pay it online most of the time.

Still, if you put a sign up not wanting my self to be armed, fine - I just won't spend my money there, thereby, respecting your property rights, while not sacrificing my 2nd Amendment rights.

  4. I've no idea what point it is you're trying to make, but if you can't even be troubled to spell your own name properly, perhaps the written media is not your best avenue for expression.
